In June 1941, Perlman and his family were evacuated to the Urals. He was drafted into the Soviet Army and from 1942 served on the frontlines of the Second World War as part of the Latvian Rifle Guards Division. After the war, he was demobilized in August 1945 and returned to Tukums.

In 1946–47, he worked as head of a shoe repair workshop in the Jelgava branch of the Voentorg. From 1949 to 1960, he was employed as a shoemaker at the Tukums District Industrial Combine. In 1960–66, he worked at the Tukums Consumer Services Combine. Since 1966, he was retired on old-age pension.

Zelik Perlman was awarded the medals “20 Years of Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945,” “25 Years of Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945,” and “50 Years of the Armed Forces of the USSR.”

In his marriage to Raina (Raine) Perlman (née Abramson) (1911, Tukums), their children were born: Isroeyl Perlman (1950, Tukums) and Hannah (Hana) Levina (née Perlman) (1947, Tukums).

During the war, Perlman’s brothers Kiva Perlman (1893, Tukums – …) and Benyamin Perlman (1895, Tukums – …) were killed on the front. His sister Basya Hamburger (née Perlman) (1900, Tukums) lived in Tukums in the 1970s.
