Medov Estere Rafailovna (née Alterman, also Movshenson)
(4 May 1909, Viliani — ?) — accountant.
Estere Medov was the daughter of Rafail Alterman (1884(?), Viliani — 1934, Riga) and Hana Alterman (1885(?), Rezekne — 1915, Viliani). In 1928 she graduated from the Rezekne Gymnasium. From 1928 to 1934 she worked as a cashier at the Viliani Jewish Loan and Savings Society. In 1934 she moved to Riga. Until 1940 she worked as an accountant at the “Boston” factory.
During the years of the Second World War, Estere Medov remained in Riga. Because her husband was not Jewish, she managed to survive the Holocaust; however, during the years of German occupation she was subjected to a forced operation and thereafter could not have children.
From 1946 to 1947 she worked as an accountant at the Riga City Trade Organization; in 1947–1948 as an accountant at the Central Base of SMK; from 1949 to 1957 as an accountant in the “Dzimtene” cooperative; from 1957 to 1963 as an economist at the “Rīgas Adītājs” factory; and from 1963 to 1964 as deputy chief accountant at the “Stroymekhanizatsiya” Motor Transport Enterprise. From 1964 she was retired.
In her marriage to Alfred-Charles Movshenson (1916, St. Petersburg — 1947, Riga), French by nationality, two daughters were born: Hanna Rutshtein (Movshenson) (1938, Riga) and Rachel Movshenson (1940, Riga).
During the Holocaust, her brother Israel Alterman (1911, Viliani — 1941(?), Riga), her stepmother Rosa Alterman (née Freidenderg) (1890 — 1941(?), Riga), and her half-sister and half-brother Ita Alterman (1925(?), Viliani — 1941(?), Riga) and Shapse Alterman (1930, Viliani — 1941(?), Riga) were killed.
From 1961 Estere Medov applied for permission to visit the United States on a guest visa at the invitation of her brother Gaiman Altman (Alterman) (1907, Viliani), who had emigrated to the U.S. in 1926 in search of work. In 1965 she was granted a three-month guest visa. In 1966 she applied to the USSR consular office in the U.S. to extend her visa, after which she ceased responding to inquiries from official authorities. According to archival records of the OVIR of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Latvian SSR, in the 1960s Estere Medov married an American citizen, Ben Medov, and was stripped of Soviet citizenship. In the 1970s she lived in New York. In 1978 Estere Medov petitioned for the restoration of her USSR citizenship; according to archival data, her request was denied.
