He served in the Latvian Army in 1930, and later worked as head of the commercial department of the Liepāja Peasants’ Cooperative and as head of a workshop at an industrial combine in the Kirov District of Riga. During the war years he served at the front; he was a disabled veteran of the Second World War, having been twice concussed and twice wounded. He was awarded the medals For the Defence of Moscow and For Victory over Germany. After the war he returned to Latvia and worked in Riga, Jelgava, Tukums and Ventspils as head of artel and industrial-combine workshops.

In August 1959 he was prosecuted under Article 109, part 2 (intentional infliction of less serious bodily harm; aggravated hooliganism) and sentenced to deprivation of liberty. In December 1959 he was released by decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR, with his criminal record annulled.
