Lurie Zalman (Salman) Barukhovich (4 April 1928, Valka) — tinsmith.

In 1922 Lurie’s parents left for Buenos Aires to earn a living and returned to Latvia in 1927; they lived in Liepāja and Valka. From 1932 the family lived in Riga. In 1936 Zalman Lurie entered a Jewish school in Riga.

During the war he was evacuated to Kazan, Tatar ASSR, where he worked as a tinsmith at Cotton Mill No. 3. From 1950 to 1952 he served in the Soviet Army. From 1952 to 1954 he worked as a tinsmith in the “Progress” and “Remont” artels in Riga. In the 1950s he worked at Riga Automobile Repair Plant No. 1, as a fitter in the repair-mechanical workshop of the Riga Timber Combine, and as a nickel-plater and tinsmith in the “Kalvis” artel. In the 1960s he worked at the “Sarkana Zvaigzne” factory and the Popov plant.

Zalman Lurie’s father, Barukh Yuda Lurie (1896–1940), an employee of the Riga parquet factory, did not manage to evacuate and was sent to the Riga ghetto, where, according to Zalman’s information, he perished in 1941.

Since the 1920s the father’s brothers — Mikhail, Hanan, and David Lurie — had been living in Israel, having left Latvia in search of work. In 1967 Zalman Lurie left Latvia.
