Levin (Lewin) Ezekiel Yakov (Jakov) (03.07.1905, Riga — 12.1983, New Jersey, USA) — Jewish leader and public figure.
Ezekiel Yakov Levin received his early education at the progressive school Heder Metukan and studied at the Greek-German Gymnasium in Riga. He was an active member of the Scout movement. In 1923, after the death of his father, he moved to the United States to live with his uncle, Yerachmiel Levin. He continued his studies at the Baltimore Hebrew College and the University of Maryland.
He joined the Zionist Labor movement Tzeirei Zion and formed a “Gordonia” youth group — one of the first in the United States. This marked the beginning of his career as a Jewish educator and Zionist leader. In 1926 he was invited to Philadelphia to teach Hebrew. He taught at the Talmud Torah (Jewish school) in Camden, New Jersey. He was active in the “Gordonia” movement and prepared for agricultural work in Palestine. He was married.
In 1929 Ezekiel Yakov Levin was appointed director of the Jewish school in Dallas, where he also organized a Gordonia group. He turned the Dallas Jewish school into one of the finest, using the Berlitz immersion method for teaching Hebrew. He founded summer youth camps.
In 1946 he left his post and became head of the Histadrut labor federation. In 1948–53 he served as director of the Jewish school in Houston, and until 1959 as director of the United Hebrew School of Philadelphia. In 1960–71 he was director of the Bureau of Jewish Education in Camden, New Jersey. He lectured at Gratz College and the Akiba Academy in Philadelphia, as well as at the local Jewish day school.
After retiring, he immigrated to Israel. He died during a visit to his daughter in the United States.
