Masha Gelbart was born into the family of Chaim-Iosif Aizikovich Gelbart (1887, Jēkabpils – 1942, Chkalov, Orenburg Region, in evacuation) and Astna Ekelevna Gelbart (née Bushkina) (1884, Krustpils – 1957, Riga).
She completed six years of schooling at the Jēkabpils School (1932), and then worked first as an apprentice and later as a sales assistant in the private shoe shop “Gunder” (1932–1934). After moving to Riga, she was employed as a sales assistant in the private shop “Goldshmidt” (1934–1936) and then at the private shop “Levin” (1936–1941). She was evacuated to Tashkent in the Uzbek SSR, where she worked at a sugar factory (1941–1942), and later as a stagehand in Yangi-Yul, Tashkent Region (1942–1945).
Upon returning to Riga, she worked as a shop assistant in a series of state-run and cooperative outlets: the Soyuzmolko Co-operative Shop (1945–1948), the Proletarian Food Trade Store (1948–1955), and Shop No. 30 of the Riga Bread Trade (1955–1966).
In 1966, Masha Gelbart received permission to emigrate to Israel, where her sister’s husband’s cousin, Ezekiel Zelikovich Slivkin (b. 1908, Riga), had been residing since 1934.
