Zeyr-Somov Miryam (1916, Riga — 1983, Israel) — Prisoner of Zion. From a young age she was a member of the organization “Hashomer Hatzair” and a prominent activist in Riga. After the Soviet occupation in 1940, Z., together with a group of Zionists, was preparing to leave Latvia illegally for Palestine, but was arrested. Three members of the group, including Z.'s husband, were shot by court sentence. Z., who was pregnant, was sentenced to 6 years in a corrective labour camp. In 1947, she was released and returned to Latvia. She continued her Zionist activities among Jewish youth; in 1969, was again arrested in Riga on charges of Zionist activities. She spent 10 months in prison, and after her release, following a lengthy struggle for the right to emigrate, left for Israel in 1973.
