David Zaks was the son of Elias Zaks (1850, Lejas District – 1936) and Shora Zaks (1865, Lejas District – 1912). David was illiterate. In 1920–26, he was a worker at a sawmill in Ape. In 1936–40, he was a butcher at Eizans' shop in Riga, Kr.Barona Street 63. In 1940–41, he was a sausage maker at the Riga Central Sausage Factory. In June 1941, David Zaks and his family were unable to evacuate to the Soviet interior due to his daughter's illness and were imprisoned in the Riga Ghetto. In 1942, Zaks was transferred to Auschwitz. After several camp transfers, he was transferred to Austria. In 1945, the camp prisoners were freed by Soviet and American forces, and Zaks became a prisoner again, this time in an American camp. After his release in 1947, he returned to Riga. In 1948–50, he was a loader at the Riga Audums and Riga Express factories. In 1951, he was a worker at the Riga Cepure factory. His brother, Mendel Zaks (1889–1938), died in a car accident. The Holocaust in Latvia claimed the lives of David’s first wife, Leja Zaks (1906–1941), and his daughter, Shela Zaks(1937–1941): they were killed during the first punitive action in the Bikernieki Forest. His siblings, Feiga Zaks (1901–1942), Fayva Zaks (1902–1942), Wolf Zaks (1907–1942), Leja Zaks (1908–1942), Haja Zaks (1909–1942), and Taube Zaks (1911–1942), also perished. His sisters, Pesya Rosenberg (Zaks) (1888) and Riva Kulner (Zaks) (1904), emigrated from Latvia to the USA in 1913 along with a relative of his; after their mother's death, the family experienced significant financial hardship. In his second marriage, to Meri Zaks (Dolgicer) (1915, Riga), David had a daughter, Eleonora Zaks (1949, Riga). In 1964, David Zaks received permission to emigrate to Israel at the invitation of his wife's sister, Nekhama Rukhin (Dolgicer) (1916, Riga).
