R. Reuven son of R. Yosef Wunderbar
Jelgava / Mitau / Mitava / Litave / Government-Appointed Rabbis
Born here on 18 Tishrei 5573 (24 September 1812).
He served as acting government rabbi throughout the year 1855 and in the months of Kislev–Nisan 5619 (October 1858 – April 1859), adding in his signature “in place of the rabbi.”
He passed away here on 28 Elul 5628 (15 September 1868).
He composed a book (in German) on the history of the Jews in the provinces of Livland and Courland: Geschichte der Juden in den Provinzen Liv- und Kurland (Mitau 1853).
Registration books here. Mentioned in Toldot Yeshivat HaYehudim BeCourland, p. 126 (where it states he was accepted here as acting government rabbi after the passing of R. Yisrael Friedman in 5604. But that same book writes later that he served in 1855, i.e., 11 years later), and omitted from Di Geshikhte.
Further about him — an article in HeAvar (booklet 11, pp. 118 ff.), and in the periodical HaKarmel (3 Elul 5620, issue 9, p. 68), a list of books he published appears.
