Shur Gertruda (1904, Riga ― 01.01.1992) ― dancer. She was brought to the USA as a child. Her first earnings as a child came from dancing in the street to the accompaniment of a knife-grinder's wheel. She studied at a dance school, and danced in various companies. In 1930 she opened her own dance school, where she trained several well-known American dancers. In the early 1940s she earned a bachelor's degree, and later a master's degree, in physical education, specializing in dance. For more than 25 years she taught at the High School of Performing Arts in New York, and for three years served as head of the dance department. Her students included Ben Vereen and Liza Minnelli. She took part in staging Broadway musicals as assistant choreographer. In 1971 she retired, but continued to work as a consultant and director, and took part in master classes and summer schools. In 1992 she was named a “Treasure of Arizona Dance” by the Dance Alliance of Arizona.
