Shenker Arkady (Ativo) (04.05.1921, Riga) ― choir conductor.
Before the war he studied in the piano department at the Latvian Conservatory (class of N. Dauge).
From 1941 he was held in the ghetto, was an inmate of the Kaiserwald concentration camp, the Jewish labour camp at Paplaka, and then concentration camps in Germany.
He was liberated in 1945 and returned to Riga. In 1946 he enrolled in the piano department of a music college, but a curvature of the fingers of his left hand sustained in the concentration camp made playing technique difficult, so Sh. switched to the choir-conducting department, studying under K. Mediņš and Arāja. He studied at the Latvian Conservatory until 1954.
He worked in Riga and Šiauliai, leading choral ensembles.
He currently lives in Germany.
