R. Tzvi Hirsh Lipman son of R. Shimon Leib Salmanov

Krustpils / Kreutzburg

Born in approximately 5603 (1843), to his father who was rabbi of Ihumin and Holosk. He studied at the Volozhin yeshiva.

He served here as rabbi,1) and afterward moved to serve as rabbi in the city of Ihumin, district of Minsk, where he served until his passing at age 58, on Thursday, 5 Tammuz 5661 (22 June 1901).

In Zikaron BaSefer his Torah teachings are brought in his name (in the Torah portion of Ki Tetze; and on p. 122, his reasons for eating dairy foods on Shavuot).

He is apparently the one appearing in the prenumeranten for the responsa Gedulat Mordechai of R. Mordechai Rabiner as “the rabbi, the Gaon, Av Beit Din, R. Tzvi Shalemanov.”2)

He also appears in the prenumeranten at the end of the book Nir on the Jerusalem Talmud, Zeraim (Warsaw 5635), and at the beginning of the book Ne'um David (Vilna 5636).

Nachalat Avot, p. 52, letter 75. Etz Chaim, p. 421. Zikaron BaSefer, p. 122. HaMelitz, 18 Tammuz 5661.

Latvia and Rabbis

1)
According to a report in the newspaper HaMelitz from 7 Tishrei 5645 (26 September 1884), at the beginning of 5645 he was still here, and in his letter to that newspaper printed on 27 Sivan 5651, he signs “of the holy congregation of Ihumin.”
2)
This appears from what is cited in Nachalat Avot, p. 52, that he had a half-brother “R. Mordechai Salamanov” — see Zikaron BaSefer, p. 158.
