Rosenman (Rosenmann) Mendel Zalmanovich (1 January 1915, Braslav, Vitebsk Region, Belarus) – worker.
Mendel Rosenman was born into the family of the tailor Rosenman Zalman (killed by the Nazis during the Second World War, Biljugi, Belarus) and the housewife Rosenman Kreina Khatsevna (killed by the Nazis during the Second World War, Biljugi). He completed four classes of primary school in Biljugi and, after moving with his family to Riga, finished seven classes at a Jewish school.
He worked as a shop assistant trainee and later as a salesman in private shops (1937–1940). He then trained as a lathe operator and worked as a lathe operator at Hassel’s primus factory (1940–1941). Having failed to evacuate, he was imprisoned in the Riga Ghetto (1941–1944), from where he was sent to the concentration camp Mežaparks, and then to the extermination camp in Duvdaga (1944). He escaped and hid in the forests until 1945.
After returning to Riga, he worked as a driver at the trust Khlebostroi (1945–1948), then as a collector of scrap materials in the artel Promutil (1948–1952) and in the artel Ausma (1952–1955). He later worked as foreman of a knitwear workshop at the industrial combine in Sigulda (1955–1957). He was convicted and imprisoned (1957–1964). After his release he worked as a driver at the factory Rīgas Adītājs (1964–1967) and as a worker at Riga Khoztorg (1967–1971).
In his marriage with Glote Yakovlevna Rosenman (Kaufman) (1924) a son was born – Zalman Mendelevich Rosenman (1947, Riga). The marriage was dissolved in 1951. While Mendel was in prison, his former wife emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany with their son.
In his marriage with Ester Leibovna Rosenman (Pikhotnik, in her first marriage – Rud) (1925, Harbin, China) a daughter was born – Anna Mendelevna Rosenman (1955, Riga).
In 1970 Mendel Rosenman petitioned for permission to emigrate to the United States, where the brother of his second wife (the son from the first marriage of the first husband of his wife’s mother) Paton Yakov Leibovich (1915, Poland) was living, but his request was refused.
In 1971 he received permission to emigrate to Israel, where since 1936 his cousin Abram Pukin (1904, Biljugi) had been living.
