R. Kalman Tzvi son of R. Arye Leib Porat

Grīva

Born in 5633 (1873),1) and is originally from Dvinsk.

During the First World War he was rabbi in Kozlov in Russia. From 5683 (1923) he served as rabbi of the town of Silene, and from the beginning of the 1930s he served as rabbi of Griva. He also served here as gabbai of Kol Chabad.2)

He passed away on 16 Iyyar 5697 (27 April 1937), and his resting place is in Dvinsk.3)

Di Geshikhte, p. 81. Latvia: Batei Knesset VeRabbanim, p. 236; what is written there, that he passed away in 5700 (1940), is an error, as is what is written in the book Edut LeYisrael that he perished in the Holocaust.

Latvia and Rabbis

1)
In another source — 5636.
2)
In Latvia: Batei Knesset VeRabbanim it states he served here as rabbi from 1934, but in the newspaper Unzer Shtime from Adar II 5692 (1932) he is already mentioned as rabbi here.
3)
In the Sefer Zikaron for R. Yehuda Leib Graubart, p. 69, it says “R. Y. Porat who was rabbi in Torzik near Dvinsk” (reprinted in Igrot Kodesh of the Lubavitcher Rebbe (Maharshab), vol. 5, p. 76, margin). But his name was Kalman Tzvi, and it is also not known to us that he was rabbi in Torzik. Moreover, R. Avitzinsky writes that he visited there in 5659 and only three or four Jewish families lived there, so it is unlikely they had a rabbi.
