R. Yaakov Polk (Polyak)

Rēzekne / Rezhitsa / Government-Appointed Rabbis

He served as government rabbi until the outbreak of the First World War.

He appears in the registration books here from 5650 (beginning of 1890). He is also signed as rabbi in the registration books of the Riebiņi (Rybnishtki) community and of the Varkljani community from 1889 onward.

“Once, when the master, author of the Shulchan Aruch and the Tanya, began to sell or give the Tanya himself, in person. When delegations came from various towns to purchase the Tanya, the master himself would estimate how many copies of the Tanya a particular city needed, and would say: for this city three copies of the Tanya suffice, or four, or more, or fewer. Once there came from the city of Rēzekne, district of Vitebsk (not to be confused with Recitsa, district of Minsk), and the holy master said at that time” \
[HaLekach veHaLevuv, Stories] \
“that the city of Rēzekne does not need the Tanya.”
