Vera Polotovskaya was born into the family of workers Iosif Izrailevich Valit (1900, Simferopol – shot by the Nazis in 1944, Kerch) and Ekaterina Veniaminovna Valit (née Piostro) (1902 – shot by the Nazis in 1942, Kerch). She completed seven grades of school in Kerch (1936) and worked there as a cost accountant at the Kerch office of Torgmortrans (1936–1941), while also completing accounting courses (1940).

During the Second World War, she worked as a cost accountant with the Danube Flotilla military unit (1941–1943, Taman–Anapa), at the Poti office of Torgmortrans (1943–1944, Abkhaz ASSR), and on the construction of the Saratov–Moscow gas pipeline (1944–1947, Moscow Region). She was awarded the medals “For the Defence of the Caucasus” and “For Valiant Labour in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945”, as well as jubilee awards.

After moving to Riga, Vera Polotovskaya worked as a cost accountant at the Latvian office of Torgmortrans (1947–1948), later as an accountant at the Pribaltika restaurant of the Riga branch of Voentorg (1951–1952), and as an accountant in Canteen No. 24 of Trust No. 2 (1958–1960). She subsequently worked as an accountant in Canteen No. 1 of the Lenin District Public Catering Trust in Riga (1961), as a cashier-confector at the Individual Tailoring Factory No. 2 (1961–1967), and as a receptionist at Atelier No. 14 of the Individual Tailoring Factory No. 1, at the Liga Production Association, and at the knitwear atelier of the Rīgas Modes Production Association (1967–1979).

Her first husband was Stepan Efimovich Pogasi (1918, Kherson – killed in action in 1944); the marriage was childless. In her second marriage to Grigory Aronovich Polotovsky (1913, Vitebsk – 1963, Riga), she had a son, Iosif Grigoryevich Polotovsky (1947, Moscow), and a daughter, Raisa Grigoryevna Sosnitskaya (née Polotovskaya) (1955, Riga). Her third marriage to Mendel Gedelevich Kanevsky (1910, Zaporizhzhia Region) was childless and dissolved in 1979.

In 1981, Vera Polotovskaya received permission to emigrate to Israel, where since 1973 her second husband’s niece, Asya Matveyevna Khavenson (née Singer) (1938, Kazan), had been living, and since 1979 her daughter Raisa Sosnitskaya (née Polotovskaya) (1955), who later emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany.

Subsequently, Vera Polotovskaya moved to West Berlin.
