Plakhina (Plakchina) Khaya (Chaya) Bendetovna (born 1904 – date of death unknown) was a participant in the illegal revolutionary movement in bourgeois Latvia from 1923. She was actively involved in the work of legal and semi-legal workers’ organisations, including the Russian Cultural and Educational Section, where she was elected a member of the governing board.
In 1925 she was arrested but soon released. In 1928, following the suppression of the Section, she was arrested again and sentenced to four years’ imprisonment. After her release in 1932 she resumed underground activities and was soon admitted to the Communist Party of Latvia. At the end of 1933 she was arrested once more and remained in custody until February 1936. Altogether, she spent eight years in prison.
After her release she worked at various enterprises. On party assignment, she headed an underground trade union committee at the “Rekord” factory. Following the restoration of Soviet power in Latvia, she worked as a Komsomol organiser at the Kraslava State Gymnasium.
During the Second World War she was evacuated to the city of Chkalov, where she worked as an employee of the NKVD. After the war she returned to Riga and from 1953 worked as head of the 18th City Library. She retired in 1961. She remained actively involved in public and party life, repeatedly serving as a member of party bureaux, local trade-union committees, and bodies of people’s control.
