R. Chaim Aharon Betzalel son of R. Refael HaKohen Paul

Jaunjelgava / Friedrichstadt / Neiru

Born on 19 Menachem Av 5642 (4 August 1882) in Dvinsk.1)

He studied at the yeshivas of Novhardok, Kovna, and Volozhin.

A distinguished student of the Gaon R. Meir Simcha HaKohen of Dvinsk, ordained by him for halakhic rulings.

He served as rabbi in Zilupe, and from 5679 (1919) served here as rabbi.

He perished in the Holocaust in Riga in the second Action for the liquidation of the ghetto, on 18 Kislev 5702 (8 December 1941).

According to the list of his son Dr. Zelik Reuven Paul. In Ohalei Shem it is written he was born in 5640; according to Latvia: Batei Knesset VeRabbanim, p. 237, he was born on 19 June 1871. In the newspaper Avend Post, issue 151, 18 Elul 5692, it is written he was born in Zilupe.
