The text of his tombstone:2)

The year: Alas! Our rabbi, the Gaon, R. Nachman Eidel is no more. \
Lamp of Israel, pillar of the right — you were. \
The wisdom of Torah from your youth you acquired. \
From the tent of Torah you did not stir all your days. \
Clear to you was the Babylonian Talmud from your young years. \
Even upon the Jerusalem Talmud you opened your eyes. \
You toiled and found in both Talmuds with your hands. \
Enough to recount your righteousness and your deeds — \
the stone cannot contain even a portion of your praises. \
From 5630, through a generous benefactor, to the rabbinate you rose. \
Rabbi and teacher to the congregation of Jakobstadt you were. \
Your greatness in good name and your mastery of the chambers of Torah \
brought you to Mitau as Av Beit Din, rabbi and teacher. \
The city of Vilna, which bore and raised you, shall lament over you; \
and the cities of Dvinsk and Jakobstadt, where your joy was raised. \
Lamentation and moaning — Mitau has lost a vessel of delight. \
He is: our father, the rabbi, the Gaon, the Tzaddik, treasury of virtues, chain of lineage, \
our master R. Nachman Eidel, son of the rabbi R. Eliezer Lipman Margolies. \
Passed away the 12th of the month of Shevat, 5658.
