Krasinskaya Liya Emmanuilovna
(25 January 1911, Riga – 10 September 2009, Haifa) — musicologist.
Honoured Art Worker of the Latvian SSR (1961), Habilitated Doctor of Musicology, Professor, and member of the Specialised Academic Council for Doctoral Dissertations (Leningrad).
From 1921 to 1933, Liya Krasinskaya studied at the Junior and later the Senior Departments of the Latvian Conservatoire (piano under Prof. A. Sokolovskis; composition theory under Prof. Jāzeps Vītols). Beginning in 1929, she performed in concerts as a soloist and accompanist, including with her sister, the singer R. Krasinskaya, in Riga, Liepāja, and Daugavpils.
In 1934, she moved to the USSR, where she taught piano, music theory, and music history at the Khabarovsk Music School. From 1937 to 1941, she taught at the Kalinin Music School. During the Second World War (1941–1945), she was evacuated.
Returning to Riga in 1945, she worked from March 1945 until July 1993 as accompanist for vocalists at the Latvian Conservatoire, later teaching theory, harmony, and musical analysis. For 45 years, she lectured on the history of Russian and Soviet music and conducted a specialised course in musicology, from which 44 musicologists graduated (among them E. Lobacheva, M. Berlin, V. Mushke, T. Kurysheva, V. Briede, J. Torgans, V. Lindenberga, M. Mikhailets, and others).
Krasinskaya published more than 40 works, including 11 books and major scholarly articles featured in the collections Latviešu mūzika (“Latvian Music”). Her research focused on the history and theory of music, as well as Latvian musical culture.
Between 1946 and 1992, she was actively involved in public musical education, delivering lectures in Latvian and Russian at the Latvian Philharmonic, on Latvian Radio and Television, at the Printers’ Club, and during the “Musical Sundays” at the Latvian Conservatoire. Since 2003, she lived in Israel.
