In 1875, Yakov Izraelson graduated from the gymnasium in Libau, then entered the Faculty of Oriental Languages at St Petersburg University, where he studied Semitic languages. In 1880, he received the degree of Candidate, and in 1883 — Master.

He began his literary career in the journal Yevreyskoye obozreniye (Jewish Review). In 1903–04, he was a contributor to the journal Voskhod (Sunrise). Under his editorship, the journal published a Russian translation of Josephus Flavius’ The Jewish War. Izraelson wrote the introduction and translated part of Josephus’ Against Apion. He authored a number of articles on Jewish and Muslim history and literature for the Brockhaus–Efron Encyclopaedic Dictionary.

From manuscripts held at the St Petersburg Public Library, he published the commentaries of Shmuel ben Hofni on the Book of Genesis, and of Yehuda ibn Balaam on the Book of Jeremiah.

Izraelson also served as an expert witness at the trial of Mendel Beilis, where he prepared a study entitled Religious Expertise on the blood libel against Jews (unpublished manuscript). He took an active part in the publication of the Jewish Encyclopaedia in Russian (1908–13).
