In 1944 the military tribunal of the 291st Rifle Division sentenced him under article 5810, part 2 of the RSFSR Criminal Code to ten years’ imprisonment and five years of loss of civil rights. After serving his sentence, he returned to Latvia in 1954.

From 1954 to 1960 he worked as a press operator at the industrial combine of the Riga district; from 1960 to 1964 he was a press operator at the Riga Children’s Toy Factory; and from 1964 onward he held the same post at the maritime club “DOSAAF”.

His marriage to Roha (Raya) Iofan (Zvik/Foss) (1913, Ventspils) ended in the 1960s. With his second wife, MeriaIofan (Kotler/Herman) (1928, Riga), he had a daughter, Lia Iofan (1959, Riga). He also adopted his first wife’s children from her previous marriage, Anatoly Herman (1947, Riga) and Isaak Herman (1951, Riga).

His mother and sister Ida Iofan (… – 1941, Riga), perished in the Holocaust. His brother and sister, Arye Iofan (1911, Riga) and Egudit Oren (Iofan) (1909, Riga), emigrated to what is now the State of Israel in the 1930s.
