Following his release, he returned to work as an electrician and acting foreman in the same construction team (1977–1978). After relocating to Riga, he worked as a carpenter and foreman in the maintenance and construction unit of the Latvian State University (1978–1982), then as a painter with the repair and construction department of the Latvian Council of Resorts (1982–1983), and on a collective farm “Draudzība” in Jelgava District (1983–1984). From 1984 to 1986, he was employed as a bricklayer at SU-427 of the Baltmorgidrostroy Trust in Ventspils, and from 1987 to 1988 worked as a painter in the repair department of the RAF factory.
