Shlomo-Hirsh Garfinkel graduated in 1918 from O. Shakhmagonov’s private Realschule in Kaluga, and in 1921 completed two years of study at the medical faculty of Voronezh University. That same year, he moved to Latvia and enrolled in a one-year Pedagogical Course organised by the Jewish Department of the Ministry of Education, which he completed in 1922.

From 1922 to 1923, he worked as a lecturer at the State Jewish Pedagogical Courses, where he taught Jewish literature and led classes in Yiddish. Between 1922 and 1927, he served as an inspector of Jewish schools. Starting in January 1924, he also taught Yiddish at Riga’s 5th City Jewish Primary School.

From 1926 until January 1929, Garfinkel was headmaster of the Ludza City Jewish Gymnasium. In 1929, he moved to Riga, where he served as acting teacher of Yiddish and Jewish literature at the Jewish Private Primary School, the Gymnasium of Engineer Ya.L. According to the Ministry of Education’s Teachers’ Certification Commission, he was officially recognised in 1936 as a fully accredited primary school teacher.

Shlomo-Hirsh Garfinkel was deported on 14 June 1941.
