R. Yitzchak son of R. Shmuel Menachem Mendel Gabertin

Krustpils / Kreutzburg

Born on 18 Elul 5668 (14 September 1908) in Livenhof. Of Chabad Hasidic stock. He studied at the Yagdil Torah school in Riga, at the Riga yeshiva, and at the Radin yeshiva, and was counted among its distinguished students who studied the order of Kodshim. The Gaon of Rogatchov held him in high esteem and ordained him for the rabbinate. He was also ordained by R. Menachem Mendel Zak, rabbi of Riga.

Son-in-law and successor of R. Reuven Shimon Levin (above), and was accepted here as rabbi on the day of his betrothal.1)

Torah novellae from him were published in the collections Sha'arei Tzion.

He perished on 14 Menachem Av 5704 (3 August 1944) in Buchenwald.2)

Latvia: Batei Knesset VeRabbanim, p. 228. Yahadut Latviya, p. 376. Newspaper HaYnt, 18 Adar I 5695 (appears below). My thanks to R. Shmuel Langzam for his assistance.

Latvia and Rabbis

1)
His wedding took place on 14 Adar I 5695, and what is written in Latvia: Batei Knesset VeRabbanim that he was appointed rabbi on 5 May 1935 (2 Iyyar 5695) is the date on which he was officially approved as rabbi by the authorities.
2)
Testimony of his brother who was with him and survived — from the mouth of his nephew R. Shmuel Langzam. Therefore what is written in Yahadut Latviya, p. 376, “according to rumor he was burned in the town of Varkljani,” is incorrect.
