He attended a secondary school in Riga from 1950 to 1960. From 1960 to 1962 he worked as a confectioner in the catering trust of Riga’s Moscow District. In 1963–1964 he worked as a technician for the Riga municipal telephone network, and in 1964 at the “Metallosbytremont” factory. Later in 1964 he served as a sailor in the port supervision service at the Riga seaport.

From 1964 to 1967 he served in the Soviet Army in Sverdlovsk region and Moscow. After demobilization he returned to Riga, where he worked as an enameller and jeweler at the repair-mechanical factory “Darbs,” later reorganized into a production association of the same name (1968–1973). From 1973 to 1974 he was an artist at the Bolderāja woodworking combine. Between 1974 and 1987 he worked as a jeweler at the “Darbs” production association, the “Elektrons” production association, and the Experimental Plant.

In marriage to Lyudmila Grigoryevna Furems (née Nabuvailo; in first marriage Kurte) (born 1946, Ivano-Frankivsk), he had two daughters:Giula Vladimirovna Furems (born 1969, Riga) and Yana Vladimirovna Furems (born 1975, Riga).

In 1987 Vladimir Furems received permission to travel to the Western sector of Berlin (Federal Republic of Germany) to visit acquaintances — Mikhail Kharitonovich Albrot (born 1925, Minsk) and Inessa Ilyinichna Albrot (née Pevzner) (born 1933, Minsk), who emigrated to Israel in 1973 and later settled in West Berlin.
