Miryama Fainstein was born into the family of a shoemaker, Yankel Lazarevich Khait (1906, Rēzekne), and a homemaker, Khena Abramovna Khait (née Zakher; 1904, Daugavpils). Together with her parents, she was in evacuation from 1941 to 1945.

In 1953, she completed 7 grades of school, after which she worked at various enterprises: the “Dzintars” factory (1953–1955), the “Iļģuciems” plant (1958), the “Kommunar” plant (1961–1962), the “Ausma” plant (1963–1964), the “Pirmais Maijs” factory (1970–1971), and the “Straume” plant (1971).

She was married to Ber Mendelevich Fainshtein (1931, Ludza). They had two sons: Aureliy Berovich Fainshtein (1956, Riga) and Grigory Berovich Fainshtein (1961, Riga).

In 1972, Miryama Fainstein received permission to emigrate to Israel, where since 1965 her parents — Yankel Lazarevich Khait and Khena Abramovna Khait — were already living, as well as her sister Gita Yankelevna Eidelman (née Khait; 1929, Riga).
