From 1922 to 1940, he worked as an upper shoe parts preparer in private workshops in Riga. From 1940 to 1941, he was a laborer at the “Somdaris” enterprise. In 1941, he was imprisoned in the Riga Ghetto. Until 1944, Bushkin was incarcerated in the concentration camps of Stutthof, Bülgraben, Rieben, and Lauenburg. After liberation from the Lauenburg camp, he voluntarily enlisted in the Soviet Army. From 1945 to 1950, he worked again at the “Somdaris” factory. From 1951 to 1955, he was employed by the Riga District Industrial Complex, from 1956 to 1965 at the Riga “Erglis” factory, and from 1965 to 1972 he worked at the DOSAAF plant.

Bushkin’s parents, Bushkin Kopel (1886–1940) and Bushkina Hasya (1896–1940), his brother Bushkin Abram (1908–1940), his sisters Pirozhok (Bushkina) Sonya (1913–1940) and Bushkina Chaya (1911–1940) were killed in Latvia during World War II. The war also claimed the lives of his first wife, Bushkina (Grinman) Khava (1908–1940), and his daughter Bushkina Sheina (1933–1940).
