Berman Vasily (real name Zeev Wolf) (1862, Mitau – 6 March 1896, Cairo) was one of the earliest supporters of the Hovevei Zion movement in Russia.
He obtained a law degree from Saint Petersburg University. In 1884, he compiled and published, in Russian, the collections Palestina (co-authored with A. Volynsky) and Zion, which outlined the ideological foundations of the Hovevei Zion movement.
Berman supported Baron Maurice de Hirsch's initiatives to encourage the mass emigration of Jews from Russia, believing that organised emigration was the primary mission of Russian Jewry and that mass Jewish migration was part of the broader plan for settling Palestine.
He served as secretary of the Jewish Colonisation Association (JCA), was the founder and head of the JCA’s emigration department, and established the Historical and Ethnographic Committee within the Society for the Promotion of Enlightenment Among the Jews of Russia.
