Berman Robert Davidovich (10.04.1927, Riga) - worker.

Robert Berman was born into the family of merchant David Idelevich Berman (1883, Zhemel, Belgium, according to other data - 1886, Bausk, Latvia - died in 1942, Kirov region) and housewife Beila Mendelevna Berman (1903, Riga - 1947, Yartsevsky district, Krasnoyarsk territory). He finished 6 classes of Latvian primary schools (1934-1941).

In 1941, as a member of the family of a large merchant (annual turnover - 240 thousand lats) Robert Berman was deported to Bereliusky district, Krasnoyarsk region, where he worked as a labourer in the office of Zagotzerno (1941-1942), then the family was moved to the village of Ust-Kan in the same region, where he was resettled again - to Vorogovo village of Yartsevsky district of the Taimyr National District, where Robert was a labourer at the Taimyr timber farm (1943-1944). He was mobilised into the Soviet Army, but after two months was dismissed as an exile (1944), he worked in Vorogovsky lespromkhoz (1944-1947).

When his brother and sister with the children's train went back to Latvia, Robert went after them without a permission. He worked in Bauska industrial combine (1947), moved to Riga, was a labourer in Gortop (1947-1948), worked as an electric fitter in Riga Carriage Works (1948-1950).

In 1950 Robert Berman was arrested and convicted by the Special Council under Article 82-1 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR for unauthorised departure from the place of exile, served his sentence in prison in the Arkhangelsk region (1950-1953), was released under an amnesty, but sent to the place of exile, where 2he worked as an electric welder at the Hydrolysis Plant (1953-1956). In 1956 he was removed from the special settlement register and returned to Riga, where he worked as a machine operator at the Metalworking Plant (1956-19663) and as a machine operator at the Experimental Factory of Artistic Fittings (1963-1971).

Robert Berman was married to Mia Abramovna Berman (Shlesinger) (1923, Riga). They had a son David Robertovich Berman (1954, Kansk, Krasnoyarsk region).

In 1971 Robert Berman received permission to emigrate to Israel, where his wife's brother Gershon Abramovich Shlesinger (1924, Vilnius) lived since 1938.

Note: In 1927, Gershon, an asthma patient, was sent by his parents to his uncle, Josef Schlesinger, in what was then Czechoslovakia. In 1938, the uncle and his nephew left for Palestine.
