During the II World War, Zhozefina Bergman was evacuated to Chelyabinsk. After re-evacuation to Riga, she enrolled at the Faculty of Law at the Latvian State University, graduating in 1950. From 1950 to 1960, she worked as legal counsel at the “Lignums” plywood factory in Riga. Between 1960 and 1964, she was transferred to a legal counsel position at the Consumer Services Department (ORS) of the Riga branch of the Baltic Railway.

In 1964, Zhozefina Bergman was admitted as a member of the Bar Association of the Latvian SSR, working at the Jūrmala Legal Consultancy Office. In 1967, she completed advanced training courses for managerial and engineering-technical staff under the Council of Ministers of the Latvian SSR, specialising in the education of judges and lawyers. In 1977, she was removed from the Bar Association due to a prolonged illness.

Bergman’s father, Ilya Itzikson (b. 1891), worked as the head of the financial department of the forestry and paper industry board of the Latvian SSR National Economic Council until retirement. In her marriage to Aleksandr Bergmanis (b. 1925), the couple had two children (born in 1947 and 1956).
