From 1908 to 1913, Emmanuil Bai studied piano at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory under N. Drozdov and later refined his skills in Vienna with L. Godowsky. In 1912, he participated in concerts of the Society for Jewish Folk Music in Saint Petersburg. He was appointed Professor at the Moscow Philharmonic.

Between 1918 and 1920, Emmanuil Bai taught in Vitebsk, and from 1922 to 1925, he lived in Riga, performing as a soloist and accompanist. He actively took part in charity concerts for Jewish organisations—for example, in October 1922, he performed with A. Metz at a fundraising concert for students of the Jewish Folk Conservatory.

In 1925, Emmanuil Baiemigrated to the United States, where he collaborated with many outstanding musicians. From 1922 to 1929, he accompanied Efrem Zimbalist on tour, and from 1931 to 1951, he worked with Jascha Heifetz, recording extensively with him. He also performed with Mischa Elman, Zino Francescatti, Joseph Szigeti, Gregor Piatigorsky, and Jan Peerce.

Emmanuil Bai passed away from a heart attack while travelling in Israel.
