Althausen Lazar Yakovlevich (18.07.1902, Daugavpils – date and place of death unknown) was a participant in the Spanish Civil War and a victim of political repression in the USSR.

Lazar’s parents were Yakov Althausen and Faina-Gitel Althausen (née Lewinsohn).

Lazar Althausen lived in Daugavpils at 24 Viestura Street. A merchant and a widower, he left Latvia in August 1936 to fight in Spain as part of the International Brigade.

After the end of the Civil War, Lazar Althausen moved to Paris, where he obtained Spanish citizenship. Later (presumably in 1939), he was deported to the Le Vernet internment camp, where the French authorities held Spanish Republican soldiers and members of the International Brigades (France, Ariège). He was confined in Block “C”.

In March 1940, the Latvian Ministry of the Interior (in absentia?) stripped him of his citizenship under Clause 2, Article 8 of—which Code?

He remained in the Le Vernet camp until August 1940, when Latvia granted him permission to return to his homeland.
