Vainode

Vainode (Vaiņode), a settlement in the Liepāja District (Republic of Latvia). Founded in 1892. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, it was known as Vainoden, part of the Hasenpoth County in the Courland Governorate. From 1918 to 1940 it was part of the Republic of Latvia, and from 1940 to 1991 — of the Latvian SSR.

In 1920, Vainode had 35 Jewish residents (5.9% of the population); in 1925 — 70; in 1930 — 120; and in 1935 — 125 Jews (8.8%).

In 1930, a Jewish school was opened in the settlement.

By the late 1930s, the influence of Agudas Yisroel had grown within the community. By 1940, there were local branches of HaNoar HaAgudati and the women's organisation Batia.

In the summer of 1941, the entire Jewish population of Vainode was annihilated.
