Riga Jewish Society of Cheap Dining Houses

Riga Jewish Society of Cheap Dining Houses (Rīgas ebreju lētu ēdienu namu biedrība).

The society was registered on 28 January 1925 (Valdības Vēstnesis, 12 March 1925).

The organization had originally been founded in 1905 and operated through donations from private individuals and institutions, with the Riga Stock Exchange Bank among its most active donors. Members of the society were personally involved in organizing charitable collections.

The main purpose of the society was charitable assistance: to provide free or low-cost kosher meals to poor Jews and to distribute food products to anyone in need regardless of nationality.

The society regularly distributed meals to particularly needy individuals, including students of the Riga Jewish Craft School of the Latvian Society for Jewish Education. On average, about 1,000 free meals were served daily. The organization also arranged charitable holiday evenings and festive dinners in honor of traditional Jewish holidays.

In 1933–1934 the society encountered serious financial difficulties due to a sharp decline in donations and growing debts. By May 1934, the society’s debt amounted to 4,775.07 lats.

In different years, members of the board and active participants included:

D. Axelrod, Elias Rubinstein, A. Pesis, Yaakov Hof(sky), Lev Minsker, Mark Ravvsky, and Zakhary Gurevich.
