Butin Josel Meerovich (1922-)
Butin Josel Meerovich (30.9.1922-, Daugavpils) - salesman. After finishing 8 years at Daugavpils school in 1938, worked as an apprentice turner at the Riga Metalwork Factory until 1941. From 1942 to 1943, he served in the Soviet Army in a reserve regiment. He later obtained 2nd group disability and did not work until 1947. From 1947 to 1950, he was a stall manager at the “Briviba” cooperative society, and until 1955 worked as a sales assistant in Riga's stalls and shops.
In 1958, he was convicted and sentenced by the Supreme Court of the Latvian SSR to 15 years of imprisonment under Article 2 of the Decree of 4.4.1947 “On Criminal Liability for Stealing State and Public Property. His sentence was served in Riga, Jelgava and Daugavpils. He was released early in 1967 on the basis of an order of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the LSSR to decrease his sentence.
From 1968 to 1970, he worked at the “Somdaris” factory. From 1970 to 1971, he worked as a leather tightener at the “Sarkana Zvaigzne” factory.
Married to Butina (Kaplan) Sonja (1928-) (dissolved in 1950), he had a daughter Butina Paulina (1949-). His second marriage to Danilova (Vanag) Tamara (1928-) was annulled in 1969. Butin's first wife lived in Israel together with their daughter in the 1970s.
In 1971, Butin left Latvia for Israel upon the invitation of his cousin, Skolnik Lazar (1918-?), a native of Vitebsk.
