Barbakov Hanan Yelavich (1916-?)

Barbakov Hanan Yelavich (27.06.1916-?, Daugavpils) - tailor. He completed six years of primary school. From 1930 to 1936 he was a tailor in the workshop of Kirsch in Daugavpils. From 1936 to 1938 he was a worker at the Liepaja sawmill. From 1938 to 1939 he served in the ranks of the Latvian army. From 1939 to 1941 he was a tailor in private workshops in Riga and a PX (military base exchange). In 1941 he was recruited to the ranks of the Soviet army and took part in combat as part of the 208th Latvian Infantry Division. He was heavily wounded and received medical care in Chita until 1943. From 1943 to 1945 he was a tailor in the district military workshops in Moscow. In 1945 he returned to Riga and was employed as a tailor in the Baltic Military district workshop until 1946. From 1946 he continued his work as a tailor at the Riga Consumer Society, the Ogre industrial complex, the “Bribiva” handicapped artel, the Baltic Military District industrial complex and the Riga Industrial Factory №1. He was awarded a medal for “victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 (WW2)”. His wife Barbakova (Liberman) Elka (1924-, Zilupe Region)* gave birth to two daughters: Barbakova Sara (1947-, Riga) and Barbakova Ita (1955-, Ogre). His parents, Barbakov Elya (1884-1941, Daugavpils) and Barbakova Sara (1887-1941, Daugavpils), died in the Holocaust. His brother Barbakov Yakov (1912-?, Daugavpils) emigrated to Palestine in 1935. His sisters, Gorfinkel (Barbakova) Haia (1919-?, Daugavpils) and Elinson (Barbakova) Lyuba (1923-1965, Daugavpils-Riga), lived in Latvia. In 1964 Barbakov submitted his first request for emigration to Israel upon the invitation of his brother, which was granted in 1967.
