Tumarin Berta-Basya Lipmanovna (née Veynberg, in her first marriage — Berz) (18.10.1889, Riga — 1976) — psychotherapist, teacher, public figure. Born into the family of a rabbi. In 1909—14 she studied at the history-philology faculty of the Bestuzhev Courses; upon completing her studies she passed all exams brilliantly. In late 1918 she returned with her family to Riga. In 1925—26 and 1931—32 she did traineeships at the Berlin Institute of Psychoanalysis; in the second of these periods she was awarded a scholarship from the institute.
In 1919—34 she was one of the leading teachers and leaders of Jewish education in Riga: in 1919—25 and 1926—31 — teacher and director of the 2nd Municipal Jewish Basic School, one of the largest in the city; in 1932—34 — teacher at a school for children with developmental delays and mental disabilities. For several years she was director of the Pedagogical Courses for Yiddish teachers. Throughout these years she was a member of the Central Committee of the Association of Yiddish Schools (TsIShO), and for several years was president of this organization. In 1927 she organized at the Association a Center for Psychological Support for children, teachers, and parents, and for three years was its chief psychologist.
In 1939 she emigrated to the USA. Immediately upon arriving she engaged in psychoanalytic practice in New York, and being already a qualified specialist, in most cases achieved successful results in resolving the deep psychological problems of her patients. In 1941—43, at the invitation of Max Weinreich, she participated as a psychologist-psychoanalyst in the YIVO seminar on psychology. From March 1957 she worked as senior consultant on psychotherapy at the Hunter College clinic, and gave lectures and led seminars for physicians.
She participated in the work of many international psychoanalytic congresses. She was a member of the German Society of Psychoanalysts and a member of the International Association of Psychoanalysts.
