He completed correspondence secondary school, and in 1971 a one-year foreman's school attached to the REZ plant (Riga). In 1945–1948 he worked as a stamper at the “Metallist” plant (Bershad, Vinnytsia Region), as a preparer at the state shoe factory (1950–1951, Vinnytsia), as a commodity specialist at the “Selenergo” operating office (1951–1952, Vinnytsia), as a grinder and milling-machine operator at the Electrotechnical Plant (1952–1955, Vinnytsia), and as a quality inspector and senior quality control foreman at the REZ plant (1956–1979).

In his marriage to Shoykhet (née Stelmakh) Tatyana Aronovna (1933, Vinnytsia), daughter Shoykhet Svetlana Semyonovna (b. 1956, Vinnytsia) and son Shoykhet Natan Semyonovich (b. 1963, Riga) were born.

In 1979 he received permission to emigrate to Israel, where his wife's parents – father Stelmakh Aron Volkovich (b. 1905) and mother Stelmakh (née Ketser) Enya Yudkovna (b. 1911) – had been living since 1979, along with his cousin Segal Khaim Borisovich (b. 1913).
