Shlossberg Max (1873, Libau — 1936, New York) — musician.
Parents — Nathan and Dora Shlossberg; grandfather Kalman Shlossberg was a shammes at the Jewish cemetery in Hasenpoth (Aizpute).
In the early 1880s his elder brother, Joseph, enrolled at the Imperial Moscow Conservatory, and the family moved to Moscow.
Joseph began teaching Sh. to play the trombone when he was 9 years old. Three years later Sh. also enrolled at the conservatory, but in 1889, after his brother's death from tuberculosis, left his studies. Several years later he enrolled at the St Petersburg Conservatory. After graduating from the conservatory he went on to continue his studies in Berlin, where he earned a reputation as a talented trombonist, playing in orchestras under outstanding German conductors.
In 1894 he came to the USA to visit his father, who worked as a shoemaker in New York. Despite his wish to continue his career in the USA, he was forced to return to Russia for military service — his 89-year-old grandfather was being held in prison at the time as a guarantee of Sh.'s return to Russia.
He served in Riga, conducting a military band and a theater orchestra, and playing the trombone. In 1902 he married, was demobilized from the army, and emigrated to the USA. He settled in the Bronx, and four children were born in the family. He played in the Yiddish theater on Second Avenue, at weddings, made several recordings, taught music at an orphanage in Manhattan, and played in the “Goldman Band” under the well-known musician Edwin Franko Goldman. From 1910 until his death he played in the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. He authored texts of technical exercises for musicians.
