Romm Lev Grigoryevich (1906, Riga).

Lev Romm studied at the Faculty of Agronomy of the Latvian State University but, after completing the third year, left for Germany, where he continued his studies at the University of Hesse.

In 1930 he joined the Communist Party of Germany and worked as editor of a weekly newspaper. He was involved in propaganda work among students. In 1933, after the establishment of the authoritarian regime, he was forced to return to Latvia. There he joined an underground anti-fascist organisation of intellectuals and participated in the publication and distribution of illegal printed materials — the newspaper “Cīņa,” the journal “For Unity,” and various leaflets.

From 1934 to 1940 he worked at a factory in Riga, and from 1940 to 1941 in the editorial office of the newspaper “Proletarskaya Pravda.” In June 1941 he joined the Soviet Army, where he served until 1945 as a political instructor, translator, and literary instructor.

In 1945–1948 he served as lecturer in the propaganda department of the Information Administration of the Soviet Military Administration in Germany and as a referent in the department supervising the activities of political parties. From 1948 he worked as senior lecturer in the Department of Languages of the Latvian Agricultural Academy.

In 1965 Lev Romm was awarded the order “Fighter against Fascism.”
