Rabinovich Girsh (Zvi) (1832, Linkovo, Ponevezh district, Kovno province — 1889, St. Petersburg) — publicist. Born into the family of a rabbi. Received a traditional Jewish religious education. In 1871 he published in the Yiddish newspaper “Kol Mevasser” (Odessa) a series of articles on natural science and biology, becoming one of the first popularizers in these fields. He wrote mainly in Hebrew. In 1876 he published a treatise on chemistry (a supplement to the newspaper “Hamelitz”). On Rabinovich's initiative, a trade school was founded in Dvinsk. In St. Petersburg he contributed to the Russian-Jewish press and was one of the editors of the journal “Russky Yevrey” (“The Russian Jew”), where he published a number of articles; in 1884 he published the journal “Yevreyskoye Obozreniye” (“The Jewish Review”). He was the author of a work on the demography of the Jewish population of Russia, “Statistical Studies.” Nine volumes of his writings on mathematics, meteorology, geology, organic chemistry, and other sciences remained unpublished.
