An amateur pianist, from the 1970s he was engaged in numerous seasonal jobs: musician with the Bureau of Variety Orchestras, artistic director at the “Riga Passenger” railcar depot, pianist with the Directorate of Variety Orchestras, and leader of a vocal-instrumental ensemble (VIA).
From 1979, he worked as a repair locksmith at the Olaine Production and Experimental Gelatin Plant. From 1980 to 1982, he was a repair locksmith in the experimental installations section of applied biochemistry at the Scientific and Production Association “Biokhimreaktiv.” From 1982 to 1984, he worked as a repair locksmith at the Riga Experimental Plant “Gidrometpribor,” and from 1984 as a toolmaker-locksmith at a plastics processing plant.

His mother, Minna Lotkina (née Belchikova, Mirnik; born 1916), a native of Denmark, left Riga in 1978 with her second husband, Mozus Lotkin, for Israel and, in 1983, due to health issues related to difficult climatic conditions, moved to West Berlin.
