Mintz Maurikiy (Moritz) (1903–1941)

Maurikiy (Moritz) Mintz was born on 22 November 1903 in Riga, into the family of the lawyer Paul Mintz (see entry). His mother was Harietta (née Feitelberg). His brother, Edgar Mintz (see entry), was a sworn attorney.

In 1922, he graduated from the Heidelberg Gymnasium in Germany. He studied law at Heidelberg University and later at Berlin University. In 1925, he passed the state examinations in Karlsruhe. After that, he spent six months in London attending courses for barristers, where he studied British law. In 1926–1927, he studied law at the University of Latvia. From February to October 1927, he was a candidate for a junior judicial position at the Judicial Chamber. From 23 November 1927, he worked as an assistant to sworn attorney P. Mintz in Riga, and from June 1931 also in Sigulda. On 8 May 1935, he became a sworn attorney in Riga.

During the Soviet occupation, from January 1941, he worked as an attorney at the 2nd Riga Legal Consultation Office. He narrowly escaped arrest by the Soviet occupation authorities by chance, but was arrested during the German occupation. He was murdered in the Riga Ghetto in 1941.

He was married; his wife’s name was Irena, and they had a son, Theodor.
