Markushevich (Markuschewitsch) Nokhum (Nochum) (born 1937, Riga) — electrical power engineer and educator.
Nokhum Markushevich graduated from the Riga Polytechnic Institute in 1960. In 1966 he earned the degree of Candidate of Technical Sciences, and in 1972 became an Associate Professor at the Institute for Advanced Training (IAT). From 1960 to 1989 he worked at the Main Directorate of Energy of Latvia (Latvglavenergo); from 1969 he simultaneously taught at the IAT, first as a lecturer and later as an associate professor.
In 1989 he emigrated to the United States, where he continued his professional work at Utility Consulting International (San Jose, California). He became Vice President of the company and a lead developer of a number of national and international projects.
Nokhum Markushevich developed statistical methods and tools for electric power quality analysis; methods of adaptive emergency load shedding and post-emergency load restoration in power systems; and a methodology for multi-objective optimal voltage control for automated distribution network dispatching systems. He led the development of numerous power-system automation projects in Latvia, North America, and Southeast Asia. He also served as a lead researcher on several projects commissioned by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), a leading U.S. energy research organization.
He is the author and co-author of six books, numerous publications, and several teaching manuals for the IAT, and holds nine inventor’s certificates. He was awarded seven VDNKh medals.
