Maimon (Wasserman) Yakov (Jakov) (1902, Latvia – 1977) – inventor of Hebrew shorthand.
During World War I, Yakov Maimon studied German and German shorthand. He was a Zionist. In 1921, he emigrated to Israel and changed his surname from Wasserman to Maimon. He invented Hebrew shorthand and, from the mid-1920s, took shorthand notes at congresses and conferences in Israel. He was the only stenographer in Israel and continued to develop shorthand until the end of his life. He was an assistant to D. Ben-Gurion.
Yakov Maimon contributed to the integration of immigrants to Israel in the 1950s and 1970s. He developed a system to help immigrants by involving volunteers who taught them Hebrew. In 1967, he became an honorary citizen of Jerusalem. In 1976, he received an honorary degree from the Hebrew University and the Israel Prize.
