Maevsky Yuliy Lvovich (23.11.1887, Taurida Governorate) — pianist and teacher, a baptised Jew (in official questionnaires he described himself as “Russian, Orthodox”).
In 1911 Yuliy Maevsky graduated from the St Petersburg Conservatoire (class of A. Yesipova) and began touring Latvia, giving solo concerts in Majori and Ķemeri. From 1914 he lived in Riga, where he taught at the Riga Music School (under the direction of N. Alunans and T. Lemba) and appeared in concerts. In 1916–1921 he worked as a répétiteur at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.
In 1921 he returned to Riga, where he founded the A. Esipova Piano Studio, which became one of the most popular in Latvia, as well as a Music Children’s Home (pre-school department). He organised annual public presentation concerts of the studio. Among the pupils of the main school were G. Balter, P. Koblents, A. Feldgun, E. Orkova and B. Moiseyev.
He gave lectures on methods of pre-school musical education and published concert reviews in the Russian-language Riga press, including the newspaper Segodnya (from 1923). He also took part in concerts as an accompanist with L. M. Sibiryakov, R. Melamedov and others.
He was granted Latvian citizenship on 11 May 1928.
Husband of D. Maevskaya.
