Likhmanis (Lichmanis) Efim Moiseevich
(22 September 1922, Riga) — photographer.
Efim Likhmanis was born into the family of Moisey Likhmanis (1898 – murdered by the Nazis in 1941, Riga) and Khanna Likhmanis (1897 – murdered by the Nazis in 1941, Riga). He completed six classes at Riga Jewish School No. 4, worked as a shop assistant for the owner of the Kal factory (1936–1941), trained as a turner at Rīgas Audums (1941), and served in the Soviet Army. He fought near Moscow and Staraya Russa (1941–1942, 43rd Guards Rifle Division, 125th Regiment), was wounded, and received treatment in hospitals (1942–1943, Omsk, Kazan, Prokopyevsk, Kemerovo Region). After returning to Riga, he did not work due to disability (1943–1948). He worked at the Kometa factory (1948–1949), and then as a photographer—first in the Bytovik artel, later at Rīgas Foto, and at the Jurmala Consumer Services Centre (1949–1971).
In his marriage to Zinaida Israilevna Likhmanis (née Shafer) (1922, Karochi, Belgorod Region), two children were born: Valentina Efimovna Tvardovskaya (née Likhmanis) (1944, Kemerovo Region) and Boris Efimovich Likhmanis (1946, Riga).
In 1971, he received permission to emigrate to Israel, where his cousin Marek Zinger (1933) had been living since 1957.
