Levant (Lewant) Leonid Yevseyevich (7 July 1946, Yartsevo, Smolensk Region) — technologist.

Leonid Levant was born into the family of Yevsey Levant (1903, Khotimsk, Mogilev Region – 1978, Riga) and Polina Levant (née Raymlina) (1914, Lyubavichi, Mogilev Region). In 1951, his parents moved to Latvia, where they lived and worked at the “Jugla” fur state farm in the Riga District.

In 1963, he graduated from Riga Evening Secondary School No. 12 for Working Youth. From 1963 to 1964, he was a student at the Faculty of Mechanics of the Riga Polytechnic Institute. In 1964, he transferred to the correspondence department of the Faculty of Instrument Engineering, and in 1967 returned to full-time study. In 1968, he transferred to the correspondence department of the Kaliningrad Institute of Fish Industry and Economy, graduating in 1976 with a qualification as a mechanical engineer.

From 1974 to 1982, he worked as a fitter, process engineer, and foreman at the “Kompressor” plant. In 1979, he was listed in the archival–agent file No. 11481 of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Latvian SSR as an accomplice in thefts of equipment from the VEF plant. The case was referred to a comradely court; since he had no prior convictions and fully compensated for the stolen property, no criminal proceedings were initiated.

From 1982, he worked as a machinist and boiler operator at the Rīgas Ekspresis production association.

Married to Esfir Levant (née Lelchuk) (1954, Riga). Their children are Diana Levant (1974, Riga) and Yevgeny Levant (1984, Riga).

In 1989, Leonid Levant received permission to emigrate to Canada, invited by his brother, Roman Levant (1938, Yartsevo village, Smolensk Region).
