Kopman (Kopmann) (née Pliner) Liya Iosifovna (b. 12 December 1928, Rēzekne) — lawyer.

Liya Kopman was born into the family of music teacher Iosif Pliner (b. 1888, Rēzekne) and dentist Esfir Pliner (b. 1896, Mogilev). In 1941 she was evacuated with her family to the town of Marks, Saratov Region. In 1945 the family returned to Riga.

In 1947 Liya Kopman completed secondary school and began working as a records clerk at the People’s Court of the Moskovsky District. At the same time, she enrolled as an external student at the Faculty of Law of the Latvian State University. In 1948 she transferred to the full-time department.

After earning her higher education in 1952, she was admitted to the Riga Regional Bar Association. Upon completing her internship, she became a member of the Bar and worked at Riga’s 1st Legal Consultation Office. In 1959 she was expelled from the Bar for a disciplinary violation. Afterwards, she worked as a senior legal adviser at the Latvian Republican Office of the State Bank. In 1960 she was reinstated, but in 1963 was again expelled from the Bar.

Married to Efim Kopman (b. 1921); the couple had two children (born in 1951 and 1953). During the war, her husband was arrested in Liepāja and later deported to the Stutthof concentration camp in Germany. Her husband’s parents — Nahman Kopman (1876, Rēzekne – 1941) and Khaya Kopman (1884, Rēzekne – 1941) — perished in the Holocaust.
